#national reconciliation

Author : Nelson Mandela

Message by President Nelson Mandela on National Reconciliation Day

16 December 1995

There are few countries which dedicate a national public holiday to reconciliation. But then there are few nations with our history of enforced division, oppression and sustained conflict. And fewer still, which have undergone such a remarkable transition to reclaim their humanity.

We, the people of South Africa, have made a decisive and irreversible break with the past. We have, in real life, declared our shared allegiance to justice, non-racialism and democracy; our yearning for a peaceful and harmonious nation of equals.

The rainbow has come to be the symbol of our nation. We are turning the variety of our languages and cultures, once used to divide us, into a source of strength and richness.

But we do know that healing the wounds of the past and freeing ourselves of its burden will be a long and demanding task. This Day of Reconciliation celebrates the progress we have made; it reaffirms our commitment; and it measures the challenges.

The Government of National Unity chose this day precisely because the past had made December 16 a living symbol of bitter division. Valour was measured by the number of enemies killed and the quantity of blood that swelled the rivers and flowed in the streets.

Today we no longer vow our mutual destruction but solemnly acknowledge our inter-dependence as free and equal citizens of our common Motherland. Today we re-affirm our solemn constitutional compact to live together on the basis of equality and mutual respect.

Reconciliation however, does not mean forgetting or trying to bury the pain of conflict.

Two terrible defects weakened the foundations of the modern South African state that were laid in the great upheaval at the beginning of the Century. Firstly, it rested on the treacherous swamps of racism and inequality. The second defect was the suppression of truth.

Now, at the end of the Century, South Africans have the real chance to strike out along a glorious path. The democratic foundations of our society have been laid. We must use our collective strengths to carry on building the nation and improving its quality of life.

The Truth and National Reconciliation Commission which will soon begin its work, is one important institution created by our democratic Constitution and Parliament in order to help us manage the more difficult aspects of healing the nation`s wounds. Thus we shall free ourselves from the burden of yester-year; not to return there; but to move forward with the confidence of free men and women, committed to attain the best for ourselves and future generations.

Reconciliation means working together to correct the legacy of past injustice. It means making a success of our plans for reconstruction and development.

Therefore, on this December 16, National Day of Reconciliation, my appeal to you, fellow citizens, is: Let us join hands and build a truly South African nation.

... practising perfection ...

@bbadenc #bbc #18july #kirstenalexander

Practising perfection, a piece from KA ...

There’s a book out there that says if you do anything for 10,000 hours, you’ll perfect the skill. My neighbour has recently bought a drum. I can hear him practising every evening. It’s not an entire drum kit (phew) – it sounds like a djembe. Over the past two weeks, I can hear he’s become more proficient and I find myself egging him on a little, wondering if he’ll eventually join a drum cafĂ© group.

So, I was thinking about perfecting things and then got to wondering why we’re so bad at relationships and communication and emotional stuff. I came to the conclusion that it’s because we’re messy. If you’re striving to perfect a surgical procedure, for example, you probably go through a whole range of things that can go wrong, but eventually, you’ll come to a point where you’ve experienced all the nuances and have learned from them. That’s when you perfect your skill.

It’s interesting that people are called ‘practising’ Christians, doctors, architects and so on (although, they may be called practicing, which means they’ve put into being what they know – but that doesn’t quite express my point, so we’ll go with the word I want). It’s because there are so many variables that you never quite get to a point of perfection. Relationships are particularly fraught with dangers, valleys and possible pitfalls. And I mean that in the nicest possible way. It’s because we are constantly growing and learning. Imagine if we never changed, never learned or were never influenced? What a boring bunch we’d be! We do learn about each other in relationships – we learn never to use ‘that’ tone with a certain person, or that so and so hates to speak about that subject. And so it goes.

But what about change? We know about that – look at children who love eating one thing for about a year and then abruptly refuse to eat it ever again. What’s that about? We can change. We can change fundamentally, slightly, dramatically or subtly. We can change overnight or over years. We can be influenced slowly or suddenly see the light. And then we are different. Humans are always in flux.

And so our relationships are always moving. We love and hate, adore or berate according to who we are today. We make decisions on who we were yesterday and who we hope to be tomorrow. It’s the same with our relationship with our Saviour. I remember an evangelist saying, ‘If you feel far from God, guess who moved’. It’s a quirky saying, but so true nonetheless. You see, the one constant we can always rely on and trust in and just know, is that He is the same always. He is, was and always will be. So, if your relationship is on a shifting field, it’s because you’re shifting and changing. That’s not a bad thing, though – it means you’re alive and are soaking up all the information around you. All of that shapes who you are. And who you are is perfect. You didn’t see that coming did you?

Well, you are. Because our Lord said so. And He is never wrong and He never does anything that’s not complete and perfect (even if we can’t see that all the time). So I pray you spend more time practising and less time perfecting. I pray you enjoy the adventure of a journey filled with potholes and picnics.

... Slap lesion ...

... what is this and how did it occur ... superior labral anterior-posterior (SLAP) lesion is an injury to the part of the shoulder called the Glenoid labrum. The labrum is the cuff of cartilage that extends the socket part of the shoulder blade to better accept the ball end of the arm bone. Wikipedia gives a very comprehensive and accurate description http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slap_lesion ... to quote the physio who is currently treating the condition "it takes 10-15 years to get to this condition ... but I should have you pain free in 6 weeks" @bbadenc #bbc #18july

Attention to detail ... or not ???

The Star newspaper of Monday, 16 October 2006, carries, on page 12 a very inspirational quote attributed to Nelson Mandela & Marianne Williamson

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear in that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our Darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?"
Actually, who are you not to be?
Your playing small doesn't serve the world.
There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fears, our presence automatically liberates others."
powerfull stuff indeed BUT but

left out

You are a child of God.
unsure become insecure

left out
... We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.
consciously becomes unconsciously
fear becomes fears,

... focus ...

Rugby Education

This from Ruggaworld - should help all the lads explain to the missus why you are so busy on a Sat arvie :)

"There are many ways you can educate the uneducated on how rugby and rugby positions work and their function, but this is by far the best one I read.

Peter Fitzsimmons (ex-Wallaby) sums it up best, try and guess what he played…

* Front Row - Without a doubt the manliest men on the pitch. Large, often hairy, beer swilling carnivores that can and will smash anything in their path. Revelling in the violence inherent in the scrum, they are rarely considered “nice” people, and in fact to some they aren’t even considered humans at all. Front rowers tolerate this attitude far and wide because they recognize their role at the top of the food chain and are used to suffering the fools that surround them.

Accused by some of simply being dumb, I prefer to think of this group as “open to unconventional ways of thinking.”

* Locks - Slightly below the front row on the food chain. As with front row players it is inadvisable to put an appendage you wish to keep near this group’s maw when they are in the feeding mode. This group of large, often foul smelling brutes is also more than willing to relish the finer points of stomping on a fallen opponent’s body and will gleefully recount the tale ad infinitum.

While they tend to take the tag “Powerhouse of the Scrum” a little too seriously, they can be useful if inured with the proper hatred of their fellow man. While members of this proud fraternity like to think of themselves as “open to unconventional ways of thinking” ? they are usually just dumb.

* Back Row - These are fine fit fellows who, like a bunch of hermaphrodites, are confused as to what their role in life should be. While they know they are undeniably linked to the forwards, there are those among them who long for the perfect hair and long flowing gowns that come with being a back.

Some relish the forward role and will do anything to win the ball and there are others within this group that will break the prime directive of the forward and do anything to prance foolishly with the ball. Generally, these guys are not all bad, but I, personally, have to wonder about any forward who brings a hairbrush and a change of clothes to a game.

* Scrum Half - Some like to think of this back as an honorary forward. I myself tend to think of the No. 9 as half a fag. While the toughest back almost always fills this position, this idea is almost laughable - kind of like the hottest fat chick. The scrum half’s presence is tolerated by the forwards because they know that he will spin the ball to the rest of the girls in the back line who will inevitably knock the ball on and allow them the pleasure of another scrum.

The No. 9 can take pride in the fact that he is the lowest numbered back and that as such he can be considered almost worth while.

* Fly Half - Primary role is the leader of the backs ? a dubious honour at best. Main responsibilities as far as I can tell is ability to throw the ball over people’s heads and to provide something soft for opposing back rowers to land on. Expected to direct the prancing of the rest of the backline - the fly half, like any good Broadway choreographer, is usually gay. While some may argue that these girls must be protected, I find it hard to support anyone whose foot touches a rugby ball on purpose.

* Centres - Usually come in two varieties - hard charger or flitting fairy. The hard charger is the one to acquire, as he will announce his presence in a game with the authority rarely found above No. 8. The flitting fairy is regrettably more common and will usually attempt to avoid contact at all costs.

The flitting fairy is also only one good smack away from bursting into tears and leaving the pitch to cry on the shoulder of his inevitable girlfriend. Both types will have extensive collections of hair care products in their kit bags and will be among the best dressed at the post-game festivities.

* Back 3 - While some people refer to this group as 2 wingers and a fullback, I swear to God I can’t make out any difference between them. They are all homos if you ask me. How these three guys can play 90 minutes of RUGBY and stay clean and sweat free is beyond me. I know for a fact that their jerseys sometimes go back in the bag cleaner than when they came out.

These ladies are fond of sayings like “Speed Kills” and “Wheels Win”, how cute. Well, I have a saying too - it’s “You’re a homo!! These guys will be easy to spot after the game because they are the finely coifed, sweater wearin’, wine sippin’, sweet talkin’ homos in the corner avoiding the beer swilling curs at the bar. On the whole, I really don’t mind this group because in the end, they sure are pretty to look at."

Tapping the genius behind ADHD

Here's how to tap into the genius behind ADD and ADHD symptoms and unleash the gifted problem solving abilities that come with this condition ...

ADD/ADHD Secret #3:
It has been said that people with ADD/ADHD have, on average, 20% higher IQs than the rest of the population. This is due largely to the amazing problem solving capacity of people with ADD or ADHD wired brains.

Most IQ tests are designed to prefer lateral thinking ability over linear thinking because it is a greater sign of high intelligence. Albert Einstein was primarily a lateral thinker, as was Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, and Leonardo Da Vinci.

Lateral thinking is a problem solving approach where you attempt many different angles in order to find a solution. You think "outside the box" and you discover many new ways of framing problems rather than staying stuck.
People who are highly capable lateral thinkers are great solution finders; inventors, entrepreneurs, pioneers, explorers and artists. Their temperaments tend to be creative, energetic, impulsive and "distractible" because those are the qualities that facilitate great lateral thinking ability. Leonardo Da Vinci epitomized this kind of temperament, so that is why we call people with this temperament, "DaVinci types".

Most people with ADD and ADHD have the DaVinci type temperament and thus excel at lateral thinking ability. Lateral thinking is most effective in certain environments - generally situations where there is little or no established procedure for success - situations where the solution must be discovered as opposed to merely regurgitated.

Most entrepreneurs, inventors and pioneers find themselves in circumstances where strong lateral problem solving ability is a greater asset than any formula one might have memorized. Lateral thinking is creative and difficult to teach anyone who doesn't already have a penchant for it. It is the opposite of linear thinking, which is the kind of thinking encouraged and graded for in most public school systems.

If someone is a DaVinci type (most people with ADD/ADHD are) then they already are natural lateral thinkers. MENSA riddles can be used to further develop and hone this gift. MENSA riddles offer the following therapeutic benefits to someone with ADD/ADHD:

1) Difficult, sometimes baffling, genius caliber MENSA riddles are often compelling enough to capture the attention of someone with AD/HD and evoke their hyper-focus.

2) Good MENSA riddles have satisfying and elegant solutions, which are in and of themselves reward enough for the mental effort required to crack them.

3) MENSA riddles are a great mental workout – similar in effect to physical exercise – because they calm and focus the ADD or ADHD mind by releasing pent up energy.

4) MENSA riddles build self-esteem with each subsequent victory and show the AD/HD-er how brilliant they really are.

5) The mental effort required to do MENSA riddles effectively exercises the DaVinci type mind, making one smarter and smarter. (I have seen IQs boosted by about 35% simply by doing a handful of MENSA riddles every day for a few weeks.)

6) The solution finding ability that doing MENSA riddles develops in your mind makes solving other day-to-day life problems surprisingly easier

ADHD & Procrastination .... interesting

"Here's why people with ADD and ADHD procrastinate - how to understand it and how to work with it.

Procrastination is a primary trouble for AD/HD-ers. We can see how this trouble plagued Leonardo Da Vinci. He barely finished anything he began. However, when he did actually finish something, it was a masterpiece.

"I have wasted my hours."
~ Leonardo Da Vinci

People with ADD and ADHD have a keen sense of intuition and the states of their minds are extreme. They are prone to experiencing periods of tormenting confusion followed by moments of great clarity. When the clarity comes in it brings with it bursts of creative genius and a spontaneous awareness of exquisite solutions to problems that previously seemed insurmountable.

The Problem:
S
ince ADHD-ers have repeatedly experienced these unexpected moments of clarity with the accompanying spontaneous insights of pure genius, they grow to anticipate them; at least unconsciously. These moments render useless all that they were struggling to do with one fell swoop of inspiration that turns the whole problem on its head. These insights reveal short-cuts and offer questions that no one ever thought to ask.

AD/HD-ers subconsciously realize that they could struggle for hours searching for something only to discover it's been in their back pocket the whole time. But it is only the spontaneous insight that reveals this impossibly easy solution, and when that insight will come no one knows. So instead of beating their heads up against the wall, people with ADD and ADHD learn to procrastinate.

They could spend weeks on a project, pursuing a particular approach only to discover in one momentary flash of insight that all that they had done could have been completely transcended in a single move. If they had just looked at the project from this new perspective, right in the beginning, they could have done the project better and done it in days instead of weeks.

"Why bother starting the project in the first place? Why not just wait till the inspiration shows up and save the strain and effort?" the inner mind of the AD/HD-er unconsciously reasons. "Why not just relax and enjoy yourself with other distractions while you wait for that moment of clarity to come?"

The Solution:
What most procrastinators are missing is that this initial struggle is the key to the great revelations. Without the struggle, the mind has no impetus to provide a revelation!

So if you have ADD or ADHD, at sometime during the completion of your project, you will likely be struck with an amazing insight into the nature of your project that completely topples all of your previous concepts and plans for it. You will want to start your project from scratch in this better, completely new way. Realizing this, at least subconsciously, you used to think something along the lines of "Why bother beginning now, then anyway? Why not just wait for that spectacular insight and then begin. Won't that save me a great deal of struggle?" The answer is "no!"

The only way you get to have that amazing insight, that paradigm shift of thought, that out of the box solution is to engage in your project - encounter the frustrating complexities of your current approach to achieving its goals.

Only through this struggle will your limited mind grow tired and yield to your unlimited genius level mind to spontaneously take over and offer the reward, the solution to your struggle."
